More fun, less traffic. And no cops, because there’s no money to be made on a road approximately as wide as a bathroom stall.

Oh how I wish I could get to my job on roads like that. I’m lucky enough to have a commute that doesn’t put me in a ton of traffic, but the highway is just so boring.

My commute is mostly four-lane surface roads. I’m actually off work today, so I took the car out for a bit before the weather gets hot and stormy. But agreed, a back road commute would be awesome.

Oh I gotcha. I guess when I’m at work I just assume everyone else is too!

Kinja'd!!!

From the dash mounted cell phone last fall. Now my commutes are by train.

These bathroom-stall-sized roads are the only places I get pulled over, and then only on my bike for taking the lane (I’m allowed by law) and holding up traffic (read, didn’t get to a place that was safe to let the officer, the only car I see for 15-20 minutes pass unabated.) It’s happened three times in the past two years, so it’s born from boredom I assume. How much traffic is on a 15' roadway in the middle of the woods at 7 AM on a Saturday?

This was the road and curve that I was pulled over on once at 7:30 AM on a Saturday for biking too far left and blocking ‘traffic’ (only the officer)

I have a backroad commute for 1/2 year while a traffic project makes me detour from my regular route. Narrow two lane for only two miles but it has a rolling hills, a sharp low speed banked 90º turn, esses followed by a railroad underpass , more rolling hills into a roundabout. Love it on the days when there are no other drivers.

Yeah, one or two of the roads were free of traffic, but for the most part I encountered a few oncoming vehicles. For the one in the background of the photo, I started off behind a van, but pulled off at a Y intersection for a minute. It’s one of the more treacherous roads in the area, with an implied speed limit of 55 (in Virginia, a rural road without a posted speed limit is implied as having one of 55), but lots of blind, sharp, unposted curves. It’s not for the the faint of heart, but it's awesome.

Wow, that sucks. I encountered a bike on one of the roads today. We gave each other plenty of room.

It also helps to do slow car fast on those roads. You are even obeying the speed limit (or within 10) and ringing out gears and driving like a hooligan. My commute via the highway to get to work is about 12 minutes. But instead I take a backroads route that makes a bunch of turns and isn’t really direct for about 20 minutes. Those extra 8 minutes are spent ringing out 1st and 2nd gears and I am not even above 60 at that point. Makes for a nice top down ride no matter the weather. Even in the snow!

Yeah, I rarely go above 60 on those roads. Too many blind, unposted curves. The road in the photo has an implied speed limit of 55, but it's curvy enough, and busy enough, that you can really only do that in short bursts. The closest I've ever come to hitting the ditch was on that road, going about 60 into a section of esses. It's an absolute blast to drive on, though.

What kind of tires you running? My new summer tires actually make the drive less fun than my all seasons did lol. It is such an easy ride but there are plenty of turns where the all seasons would slide a little if I pushed the car. But now with the summers, flyin Miata suspension, and bigger front sway bar the car stays flat and sticks. I have to be pushing it way harder than I ever would on a public street to get it to give way. This is more fun when the road is more exciting or at autox for sure though!

Fronts are summers (Yokohama S-Drives) and rears are all-seasons. The fronts are going to need replacing sometime next year, at which time I’ll switch to all summers. Suspension is mostly stock for now, aside from strut tower bars. I have a bigger rear sway bar and a few other things ready to go, but I want to get some more parts for it before I start putting everything on. As it is, I can break traction on the rears in hard corners. On one road this morning I went into a curve with an advisory speed of 15 at about 30 and had some tire squeal. I saw a guy standing in his yard at that corner giving me a disapproving look as I came out of it.
